Thomas Hoenig Joins the CFA Institute Systemic Risk Council

Washington, DC – March 9, 2026

CFA Institute Systemic Risk Council (SRC) today announced that former Federal Reserve Bank President, Thomas Hoenig will join the Council.

Erkki Liikanen, Co-Chair of the Council said, “It is with great pleasure that today we announce the addition of Tom Hoenig to our group.  He is multi-dimensional expert on the policy and politics of economic stability that have been the focus of our Systemic Risk Council since 2013.  He will broaden our perspective on the many challenges to timely identification and response to systemic threats in a rapidly evolving economic system.”

Mr. Hoenig was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and a member of the Federal Reserve System’s Federal Open Market Committee from 1991 to 2011. He led the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City during the Great Recession and the banking crisis of 2008 and 2009.

Currently, Mr. Hoenig is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Prior to joining the Mercatus Center, Mr. Hoenig served as Vice Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation from 2012 until 2018.

The appointment is effective immediately and brings the Council to a total of nineteen members.  The Council is committed to engaging with U.S., European, and other global policy makers at the highest levels in order to preserve a stable financial system.
